Fake AntiVirus Programs
Removing fake Anti-Virus programs has kept me very busy the past winter. Why is this so? How do people get infected so easily ? Where do they come from? What can I do to prevent myself from being infected?
There are a few simple things that you can do to minimize your risk.
- First, make sure you have a current legitimate Virus Program installed and updated. Which Virus Program you use is up to you. There are many that are good. There are free programs such as AVG and Microsoft Security Essentials and many commercial services like the tried and true McAFee and Norton (Symantec) AntiVirus Programs, plus a myriad of others. But, they are only effective if they are updated regularly. Set them to do auto-updates so you do not have to remember to do it.
- Many of the Virus Programs also offer Full Security Suites that include Virus Program, Malware detector and Firewall. These are all good but again, there are very good Free firewall solutions as well. Zone Alarm and Microsoft Firewall are just a couple. Whichever one you chose, make sure it is active.
- Always be suspicious of E-mails you receive that contain attachments or links, even if you know the sender. Do not EVER click on a "check this out" link.
- Be very careful downloading shareware and free programs.
- Use FireFox as your Internet Browser.
- If you get a suspicious pop-up, READ the entire message. DO NOT click on it or try to close it without knowing what it means. Either open up another Browser window and search for the exact error message in Google or call your Computer Technician for advise.
- Practice "Safe Computing" be careful of the sites you go to.
Now, with that said, I have not had any Fake Virus Programs I have not been able to get rid of but some are very persistent and require extra work. Like most things, Prevention is easier and cheaper than removal.
